Denver G. Champion, of Augusta, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 20, 2010. He was 24 years old.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 23, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at The Poteet Funeral Home, 3465 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta. The funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The committal services will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pastor Rochester and Taten Wagner will officiate.
Denver is survived by his mother and step-father, Darlene and Clinton McElroy of Augusta; his father and step-mother, Chris and Lori Champion of Dowdon, Georgia; his fiancée, Juli Wiggins of Augusta; his grandparents, Chester Champion of Anniston, Alabama, Dee Troxell of Wooster, Ohio, and Robert and Dorothy McElroy of Boonville, Indiana; his sisters and brother, Jennifer Champion Maldonado of Augusta, Emily Bright of Dowdon, Blake Champion of Dowdon, and Brittany McElroy of Augusta; his niece, Tatyanna Maldonado of Augusta; several aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members and a multitude of friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Linda Champion, and LuVerne and Doris Claude.
Denver was a 2005 honor graduate of TW Joseph Comprehensive High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the 4H Club. He was also a member of the Wheelchair Soccer and Track and Field for the Richmond County Adaptive Sports Program and was one of the original members of the Dream Team. Denver loved to use his computer and talk on the phone. He was quite a daredevil, even skydived with his mom last year. Denver loved helping and encouraging other people.
Members of the original (1999 – 2005) Richmond County Adaptive Sports Program “Dream Team” will serve as honorary pallbearers at his funeral service.
